,ABOUT RIYAZ

kashmir to cape town: a culinary and personal journey

My name is Riyaz Mir.  I was born in Kashmir in northern India and grew up, sitting by my mother's side in our kitchen, in Srinagar.  In Kashmir, men aren't supposed to cook, but my early years, watching my mother lovingly tend her steaming pots in that kitchen, taught me both the importance of sharing my culture with friends near and far, and the subtle magic of mixing spices, herbs, and fresh ingredients.  I moved to South Africa in 2004, bringing stories, recipes, and a love of cooking with me.  I started working at Masala Dosa restaurant in Long Street soon after my arrival, and many of our oldest customers have been with me from those early days.  In 2016, the opportunity arose to buy the restaurant and make it reflect my own values, traditions, and passions.  For four years it was my pleasure to welcome you to Masala Dosa and I would still be doing so if the Covid crisis hadn’t forced us to close down in July 2020. The restaurant may be behind me, but my passion for cooking is not. Please join me on the ongoing personal and culinary journey that started among the mountains of Kashmir so many years ago.

COOKING WITH RIYAZ

Riyaz's cuisine highlights natural flavours, complex spice combinations and, above all, flexibility for you, your family, or your guests.  From traditional fragrant curries to delicious appetizers, desserts, and lassi's, Riyaz knows how to bring out the best in local South African ingredients and transform them into scrumptious delicacies from the Indian sub-continent.  Sample potatoes infused with mustard seed and curry flavors, sambar (a delicious combination of lentils, vegetables, and tamarind broth),  coconut chutney, and more.  Riyaz will cook for you (or your event) or teach you to cook mouth-watering meals, whether it be for an intimate meal for friends and family, or a party and event to remember.  And Riyaz's food is rich in vegan- and vegetarian-friendly starters, mains, desserts, and drinks, so everyone can share in the culinary delight which is Indian food!

Wow - a 3 hour cooking lesson from Riyaz!  I thought I knew how to cook decent Indian food, well this master showed me many tricks on how to improve your curry dish and prepare the basics for most curry recipes.  A very casual relaxed teaching technique and even if you do not know how to chop an onion, or know your spices, Riyaz will put you at ease and teach you with patience.  The best is to eat the meals that you have cooked.  I recommend all curry home cooks to do this class, you will not regret it.
